Online lessons take place using Google Meet and require a supporting device and internet connection
Frequently Asked Questions
All online lessons take place online using an app called Google Meet. All you need is a browser if you use a computer (Google Chrome is recommended). If you use a smartphone or tablet, you just need the Gmail app installed on your device.
I use direct audio and multiple cameras during the lessons so rest assured that everything I do will be heard and seen very clearly.
The short answer is yes. However, it is more challenging if you are a complete beginner. It’s harder to progress in the beginning when I cannot physically help you put your hands in the right places and develop your sense of rhythm in real-time.
I would recommend online lessons to students who already have some experience playing guitar (or any musical instrument).
That being said though, it is still possible to do online lessons as a complete beginner – your progress in the beginning might just be a little slower compared to in-person lessons.
There are certain things you need in order to do online lessons. They are:
- A working computer, smartphone or tablet
- A working camera and microphone on your device / webcam
- Your device can run Google Meet (either mobile app or via a browser on a computer)
- A stable internet connection
- Your own guitar
I made short quiz you can take to check which lesson type works best for you. Click here to take the quiz.
For Online lessons, students from all over the world are welcome. As long as the time zone difference does not make it impossible to find a time that works for both us.
Prices will be charged in NZD no matter where you are taking lessons from.
I would suggest always having a backup plan such as using your phone as a mobile hotspot or investing in a mobile 4G dongle.
Unfortunately, there is not much I can do from my side if you keep missing lessons due to poor internet. That’s why having a stable internet connection with a reputable service provider is highly recommended for online lessons.
I will email you all relevant tabs and notes after each lesson or where applicable.
I teach students from ages 10 and up. Almost no one is too old for guitar lessons. I have taught students up to the age of 70.
I teach all skill levels form first-timers all the way to highly advanced. My theory knowledge is also advanced (I have an Honours Degree in music). I can also help you with certified exam preparation such as Rockshool or Trinity.
The main styles I have experience in teaching are Pop, Rock, Blues, Metal, Jazz, Latin, Funk, Country, Folk.
Styles I have less experience in are Flamenco and Classical.
The term ‘play the guitar’ is so broad and can have a completely different meaning depending on who you ask. However, most of my students are able to strum along to their first song after about one month.
To get good enough to perform well-known songs on stage (or to a small group at home) can take years, depending on the kind of repertoire you have in mind. It also depends on how many hours a week you practice outside the lessons.
Ultimately, I give can you the tools and show you the best way to get from point A to point B but it all comes down practice time, focus, and determination. Having fun while you do it, is crucial to long-term success.
For online lessons I accept credit or debit card payments via Stripe.
If you’d prefer to pay with PayPal or direct bank transfer, just let me know and I’ll accommodate you with a manual payment option.
Unfortunately, I do not accept cash for online lessons.
Testimonials
Hear it from some former students of mine:
- With a couple of decades of classical training under the belt, I’m very picky with music teachers. Erick checked all the boxes, and is a great teacher! He is patient, very good at explaining technique and theory, makes the lessons fun and interesting. Highly recommended!
Shanu van der Berg
Former Student
- I highly recommend my daughters guitar teacher Erick Gerber. Erick is so patient and encouraging with all his students his lessons are well structured making it easier to grasp what is being taught. Erick has a great passion for music and always motivates my daughter , thank you for all your time and effort with my daughter.
Mandy Arazym
Parent of Former Student
- When I met Erick, I knew nothing of music theory. He guided me through my journey to understand the concepts of music and how they are used. He also helped me improve my techniques on the guitar and corrected my very bad habits. Great teacher with a good ear – I would highly recommend these lessons.
Meyer van der Walt
Former Student
- Erick has been a musician inspiration to me my whole life. I watched him perform live endless times with countless people, and every single time was his best effort, and greatest outcome. Over and above performing, Erick is a serious music boff and will be able to teach all the technical and theoretical ins-and-outs that one might need. An incredible musician and a wonderful person to know.
