Once-off lessons can be either in-person or online. Both types have their own respective requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Once-off lessons can take place either online or in person, depending on your situation.
If you’re in the Bay of Islands area at the time of your lesson, I would suggest coming in to Haruru and having the lesson in person. If you’re too far, doing it online via Google Meet is another option and works very well too.
To get started, simply click “Book Now” on the session length of your choice, choose an available time slot via Calendly, make the payment and voila! The lesson is booked.
For in-person lessons you need:
- To be able to travel to my home studio in Haruru (Bay Of Islands, Northland, NZ) and back.
- Be on time for the lesson
- Have your own guitar and plectrums
For online lessons you need:
- A stable and reliable internet connection
- A working computer with a webcam and microphone and/or smart device
- Have a browser app if you’re using a computer or the Gmail app if you’re using a smart device (in order to run Google Meet)
- Your own guitar, tuner and plectrums
Most people prefer having the lessons online but it really depends on your situation.
I’d suggest booking online if:
- You have a working computer with a webcam and mic (or a smart device)
- You live far away from the Bay of Islands, NZ
- You already have some experience playing guitar (i.e. you fingers are somewhat used to the fretboard and you’ve developed a reasonable sense of rhythm)
I’d suggest booking in-person if:
- You are in the Bay of Islands area around the time of your lesson
- You are very new to the guitar
- You’re not the best with technology
- You don’t have a reliable internet connection
- You’re looking to get something out of the lesson that will only work if in the same room
As long as you give me 12 hours notice, you can reschedule up to 3 times with no penalties.
If you need to cancel the lesson altogether, I will need 5 calendar days’ notice.
I take my appointments quite seriously and so I often turn down other students or work opportunities because of my lesson commitments. That’s why I must have these clauses in place – to keep the once-off lessons viable.
Hence, you will forfeit the money if:
- You want to cancel less than 5 days before
- You want to reschedule for the 4th time
- You want to reschedule last minute
- You don’t show up to the lesson and I don’t hear from you
Booking a lesson takes about 5 minutes or less.
To get started, simply:
- Click “Book Now” on the session length of your choice
- Choose an available time slot as well as the lessons style (either online or in-person) via Calendly
- Make the payment via credit card
- Voila! The lesson is booked.
If you have the ability to commit to a weekly lesson slot, then I would definitely recommend monthly lessons over once-off lessons.
However, I also understand that some people’s schedules are volatile and unpredictable or they only want to pick my brain for a few hours and then be on their way again. Once-off lessons are a way to accommodate these kinds of people while still keeping it viable for me.
I teach students from age 10 and up. Almost no one is too old for guitar lessons. I have taught students up to the age of 70.
Those who usually get the most out of a once-off lesson are between the ages of 18 and 50 but all ages from 10 and up are welcome.
I teach all skill levels form first-timers all the way to highly advanced. My theory knowledge is also advanced (I have an Honours Degree in music). I can also help you with certified exam preparation such as Rockshool or Trinity for any grade.
For once-off lessons, I recommend intermediate-level players but all are welcome.
The main styles I have experience in teaching are Pop, Rock, Blues, Metal, Jazz, Latin, Funk, Country, Folk.
Styles I have less experience in are Flamenco and Classical.
For once-off lessons I accept credit or debit card payments via Stripe.
If you’d prefer to pay with PayPal or direct bank transfer, just let me know and I’ll accommodate you with a manual payment and booking option.
Unfortunately, I do not accept cash for once-off lessons.
Testimonials
Hear it from some former students of mine:
- With a couple of decades of classical training under the belt, I’m very picky with music teachers. Erick checked all the boxes, and is a great teacher! He is patient, very good at explaining technique and theory, makes the lessons fun and interesting. Highly recommended!
Shanu van der Berg
Former Student
- I highly recommend my daughters guitar teacher Erick Gerber. Erick is so patient and encouraging with all his students his lessons are well structured making it easier to grasp what is being taught. Erick has a great passion for music and always motivates my daughter , thank you for all your time and effort with my daughter.
Mandy Arazym
Parent of Former Student
- When I met Erick, I knew nothing of music theory. He guided me through my journey to understand the concepts of music and how they are used. He also helped me improve my techniques on the guitar and corrected my very bad habits. Great teacher with a good ear – I would highly recommend these lessons.
Meyer van der Walt
Former Student
- Erick has been a musician inspiration to me my whole life. I watched him perform live endless times with countless people, and every single time was his best effort, and greatest outcome. Over and above performing, Erick is a serious music boff and will be able to teach all the technical and theoretical ins-and-outs that one might need. An incredible musician and a wonderful person to know.
